Ashe County’s location in the Mid-Atlantic and northwestern North Carolina make it strategically located to reach a number of major metropolitan business hubs and ports. Ashe has a number of two-lane roadways including State Highways 16, 88, and U.S. 221, which will be widened to a four-lane highway in the coming years. U.S. highway 421, a four-lane thoroughfare, is a 14 mile drive from Jefferson. The County is also close to four major interstates, including I-40, I-81, I-85, and I-77. The Ashe County Airport provides general aviation services within the county, with international service available within a two-hour drive via Charlotte Douglas International and Piedmont Triad International.
