Recreation

Ashe County hosts a wide variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to this beautiful northwestern corner of North Carolina. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs along the eastern area of the county and has many possibilities for scenic sightseeing via car, motorcycle, bicycle, and hiking along with some great spots to have a leisurely picnic. The New River offers miles of fantastic waters for canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. There are several privately owned canoe and kayak rental businesses that will furnish a vessel and transportation back to the starting point following your journey, or you can bring your own. Some rental businesses also offer camping along the river as an option for your visit. Is golf more your speed? We're home to two 18-hole golf courses - Mountain Aire (public) and Jefferson Landing (private).  Additionally, Ashe County has several state parks in which to enjoy our natural beauty that include Elk Knob State Park, New River State Park, and at 4,665 feet above sea level, the majestic Mount Jefferson State Park. Our state parks offer great hiking, scenic views, and picnicking areas.

The former route of the Virginia Creeper train that ran from Abingdon, VA and through Ashe County offers a look into history by way of a biking route in the Todd area.
